Physical Disability Resources

Tips to Decrease Barriers:

  • Educate friends, family, and the community to increase understanding and awareness about disabilities and the benefits of physical activity
  • Increase awareness of outreach to persons with disabilities in the community
  • Provide support to persons with disabilities in existing community programs
  • Increase universal accessibility of facilities and outdoor areas
  • Provide accessible recreation and fitness equipment
  • Research ways to adapt and include persons with disabilities in existing programs

Why is physical activity important for persons with disabilities?

  • The Surgeon General’s Report showed that diseases related to a lack of physical activity are major causes of disability and death in the United States
  • Aerobic activity increases endurance, improves the function of the heart and lungs, reduces the risk of developing diseases of the heart and blood vessels including coronary artery disease, and high blood pressure
  • Strength training improves strength, bone health, and overall daily function
  • Stretching exercises can improve range of motion, reduce muscle soreness, reduce spasticity, and improve movement
