Board of Directors

Ian Rolland, Fort Wayne, Board Chair

Ian Rolland has served on the board since its founding in 1990, and has been chair since October 2003. He is the retired chairman and CEO of Lincoln Financial Group.

"Ian has been integral to the creation and leadership of the foundation," said Robert E. Carter Jr., director of the DNR. "His love and concern for the preservation of Indiana's natural resources, coupled with his professionalism and experience, makes him a natural fit for chairman."

A graduate of DePauw University with a master's in mathematics from the University of Michigan, Rolland's other non-profit involvement includes The Nature Conservancy Board, Chair of the Board at DePauw, Indiana Historical Society Board, East Wayne Street Center Board, and the Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana Board.

Missi Bush-Sawtelle, Corydon, Vice Chair

Bush-Sawtelle has served on the Indiana Natural Resources Foundation board since 2003 and was elected vice chair in 2008. She is employed by Bush Trucking in New Salisbury, Indiana.

Bush-Sawtelle's connection to Indiana’s natural heritage began in the early 19th century when her family settled along the banks of the Blue River. This historical connection has led Bush-Sawtelle to work diligently to protect the abundant natural and cultural resources found throughout Indiana.

A graduate of Indiana University Southwest Bush-Sawtelle also serves on the Indiana Blue River Commission and on the board of the Indiana Historical Society.

Elizabeth Smith, Indianapolis, Secretary

Smith has been on the board since 2000.  Since 2001, she has been director of Philanthropy at the Indiana Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Previously, she was a partner at the Ice Miller law firm in Indianapolis. She has both a bachelor's and J.D. from the University of Illinois.
 
Smith's other non-profit activities include The Humane Society; Pleasant Run, Inc.; Adarth Burkhardt Series, Class VII Participant; Stanley K. Lacey Executive Leadership Series, Class XVII Participant; Marion County Animal Care; and Control Board Reach for Youth, Inc.

Overview of Board

The Foundation board consists of 12 members with at least one from each congressional district. No more than six may be of the same political affiliation and all are appointed by the Governor for a four year term.
