TOLL ROAD DETOURS

I-80/94 DETOURS

The speed limit on I-65 is reduced to 45 mph within the construction zone throughout the project. The speed limit on eastbound I-80/94 from Grant Street to the southbound I-65 ramp also is reduced to 45 mph. INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and keep in mind worker safety while driving through construction zones.

Until completed in November 2008, the ramp from northbound I-65 to westbound I-80/94 is restricted to one lane with an 11-foot width restriction. A posted wide load detour directs traffic on northbound I-65 wanting to travel west on I-80/94 to take I-80/94 east for approximately 2 miles to State Road 51 (S.R. 51) north to westbound I-80/94 via the clover leaf ramps.

For nine months beginning March 1, a portion of I-65 and some ramps are closed. The closure will allow construction to finish in half the time, as well as increase safety for the traveling public and construction workers. Access to businesses on 15th Avenue will remain open. Access to I-65 from 15th Avenue will remain closed during construction. The ramps from northbound I-65 to eastbound or westbound I-80/94, and the ramp from eastbound I-80/94 to southbound I-65 will remain open.

The closure will include:

  • Approximately 1.5 miles of I-65 from the bridge over I-80/94 to 15th Avenue
  • The ramp from I-80/94 W.B. to I-65 N.B.
  • The ramp from I-80/94 W.B. to I-65 S.B.
  • The ramp from I-80/94 E.B. to I-65 N.B.

Detour routes for I-65:

  • I-65 N.B. to 15th Avenue – Take I-80/94 E.B. to State Road 51 (S.R. 51) N.B. to U.S. 12/20 W.B. to I-65 S.B. to 15th Avenue

Detour routes for I-80/94:

  • I-80/94 E.B. or W.B. to I-65 N.B. – Take S.R. 51 N.B. to U.S. 12/20 W.B. to I-65
  • I-80/94 W.B. to I-65 S.B. – Continue on I-80/94 W.B. to the ramps at S.R. 53 (Broadway) to I-80/94 E.B. to I-65. S.B.

Major Moves fully funds a decade of critical highway projects in Indiana. When Major Moves is complete in 2015, more than 200 new construction and 200 major highway preservation projects will have been built. Major Moves capitalizes on Indiana’s strategic location at the Crossroads of America by building a superior road infrastructure. This innovative plan will bring jobs to the Hoosier State and leave a legacy for Indiana to be a global leader in distribution and logistics.

Construction Information

For the three Borman Expressway (I-80/94) and I-65 Interchange Modification Major Moves contracts, the Indiana Department of Transportation has estimated the total cost at $187 million.

The first contract, awarded in 2007 to Walsh Construction Company of Chicago for $46 million, includes the construction of new ramps from northbound Interstate 65 to westbound I-80/94 and eastbound I-80/94 to southbound I-65, and rehabilitation of three bridges within those areas. The second contract, awarded in 2008 to Superior Construction/E&B Paving of Gary for $46 million, includes the reconstruction of I-65 in the area where it crosses over I-80/94, the rehabilitation of six bridges in that area and the reconstruction of the Colorado Street bridge.

The third project will begin in 2009.

After the three-year project is completed, the Borman Expressway will have four travel lanes in both directions from the Illinois state line to east of the interchange with a continuous merge lane in both directions up to Central Avenue. This fully funded Major Moves project will reduce congestion and increase safety and mobility for motorists.
