| Project Information
The purposes of this project are to: (1) replace
the existing pavement and widen I-465 from I-65 to just north of
86th Street; (2) Construct additional lanes along I-465 from I-65
to one-half south of 71st Street; (3) Reconstruct the 71st Street
interchange to include a loop ramp in the northwest quadrant and
a direct connection to 73rd Street in the northeast quadrant; (4)
Reconstruct and widen 71st Street from Intech Boulevard to Woodland
Drive; (5) Reconstruct the 79th Street bridge over I-465 and reconstruct
79th Street from 900 feet west to 750 feet east of I-465; (6) Reconstruct
the 86th Street interchange to include a loop ramp in the northwest
quadrant.
The lane configuration of I-465 will be four through
lanes and two auxiliary lanes in each direction. The basic configuration
of both 71st and 86th Streets will be two through lanes and up to
three auxiliary lanes in each direction. The cross section of 79th
Street will be one through lane and one dedicated bicycle lane in
each direction. In addition, multi-use trails will cross through
both interchanges.
Construction activities will begin in 2004 with
the reconstruction of the 79th Street Bridge, addition of lanes
on I-465 between I-65 and 71st Street, and mainline work required
for widespread maintenance of traffic. Work scheduled for 2005 include
the replacement and widening of pavement of I-465 mainline and the
reconstruction of the bridges over 71st and 86th Streets. In 2006,
the 71st and 86th Street interchanges will be rebuilt. It is planned
that all affected roads will be open to unrestricted traffic by
2007.
Traffic will be maintained through a variety of
methods. The 79th Street traffic will be detoured during the bridge
replacement. Mainline I-465 will be maintained by crossovers, while
71st and 86th Streets will be restricted to two lanes during construction.
Interchange ramps will use temporary connections when possible,
however if temporary connections are not possible, detours to the
next interchange will be utilized.
