Division Overview
The Director of the Program Engineering Division is Brad Steckler. The division is the major center for the collection of data used throughout all of INDOT. That data received within this division is typically an essential element for projects to their use regarding planning for as well as analyzing the future needs for the State of Indiana. There are five departments and five sections within the division. The five departments are:

  • Pavement Engineering:

  • Traffic Safety: The Traffic Safety Unit runs several safety programs. Some of these programs are the Highway Safety Improvement Program, High Risk Rural Road, Rail-highway Crossing safety program, and Safe Routes to School Program

  • Mobility & Congestion:

  • Bridge : The Bridge Unit has two sections. The Bridge Management section and
     the Bridge Inspection section.
    Sections :
  • Bridge Management : The Bridge Management Section does the analyzing of bridge data for cost–effective projects.
  • Bridge Inspection: The Bridge Inspection Section does the inspection and inventory of bridges that are owned by the state and the counties in Indiana. They also generate and submit bridge data to the Federal Highway Administration once a year. The bridge department also keeps an Inventory of Bridges Book and a Bridge Log Book, which keeps the legal load limits for the bridges less than 16 tons and other useful information about bridges.

  • Inventory and Tracking: The Inventory and Tracking Unit is at the heart of the data collection and dispersement of information for INDOT. Some of the sections that collect data are Roadway Inventory and Traffic. The Research and Document Library stores past and present road construction information. Both the GIS and Technology sections support other sections and departments as needed with mapping, analysis and data collection.

Sections :
  • Research & Document Library: This section maintains INDOT records of project documentation that shows current and past road construction within Indiana.
  • GIS / Mapping Cartography: This section of the Program Engineering Division provides spatial analysis and mapping services for divisions within INDOT.
  • Roadway Inventory: This section is responsible for maintaining a roadway inventory of all certified roads within the state of Indiana.
  • Technology Services: This section assists all areas within the division in achieving their technology needs.
  • Traffic Monitoring: This section of the division provides traffic counts from around the state, which helps with the development of highways around the state
