Inventory Schedule and Public Meetings
Historic bridges are an important part of the heritage, development and transportation system of Indiana . As our state has grown, certain historic bridges have been replaced with modern bridges to accommodate today's higher traffic volumes and larger vehicles. Recognizing the value of Indiana's historic bridges, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has commissioned a study to complete an inventory and develop a process to manage and preserve this valued resource.
INDOT, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and the Indiana State Historic Preservation Office, has initiated a historic bridge preservation program. This program will provide incentives for bridge owners to help prevent the loss of these important historic resources and a process to manage historic bridges in Indiana .
The goal of the historic bridge preservation program is to identify the state’s historic bridges and select examples for preservation. The current project will result in the following management tools:
An important component of this project is public involvement. Ongoing opportunities for public input during this project include a series of public presentations and the project Web site. Dates and locations for presentations are provided on the Inventory Schedule and Public Meetings page.
Additionally, the Public Comment Form will be used to solicit and receive public input. This form enables interested parties to provide comments related to inventory documents available for public review and be added to the notificiation list.
As the work progresses, the Summary and Results page will provide a summary of work completed, such as the contextual study of historic bridges in Indiana and inventory documents available for public review.
This Web site will be updated periodically to reflect current inventory information.
