Historic Bridge Inventory Introduction
Inventory Schedule and Public Meetings
To complete the inventory, data on bridges built through 1965 in Indiana is now being gathered and analyzed. Under the direction of INDOT, Mead & Hunt, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in historic preservation, began work on the statewide inventory of historic bridges in June 2006.
The multi-step methodology relies on several data inputs to evaluate historic bridges in a way that is both transparent and replicable. Identification of bridges that are “most suitable for preservation” is based on an engineering assessment that considers functionality, safety, feasibility, and cost-effectiveness of long-term preservation. Identification of bridges that are “excellent examples of a given type” is based on a bridge’s historical significance compared with other bridges of the same structural type.
The resulting methodology to identify Select and Non-Select Bridges strikes a balance between engineering criteria and historic significance in an effort to preserve the best overall candidates.
