Environmental Services contributions to INDOT's industrial hygiene program are mainly in two areas. One is in helping the Internal Affairs Division with worker safety concerns, particularly with respect to exposure monitoring. For example, the employee at right is equipped with instruments to measure her level of exposure to noise and carbon monoxide.
The other primary focus of our industrial hygiene efforts is in the performance of periodic environmental audits or assessments.
These investigations have resulted in a dramatic increase in awareness of safety and environmental risks at our facilities around the state. That means a safer workplace for employees, less danger of environmental impact and reduced liability for INDOT. This commitment to improving our performance carries through to the top levels of the agency. As the "Greening of the Government" Task Force presents new challenges to State agencies, INDOT will continue to meet and exceed the goals set for us.
