Erosion and sediment migration pose a subtle threat to surrounding areas. If left unchecked, they can have a serious impact on the health of nearby waterways. Construction sites frequently present a high risk for erosion, and highway projects are no exception. Completely eliminating sediment migration is not a realistic goal. However, through the use of temporary structures, such as the rock check-dam at left, we can significantly reduce it while the site is actively under work. Permanent seeding of slopes at the project's conclusion will protect the grade for years to come.
For more information about erosion, the dangers it presents to the environment and what you can do about it, visit the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Soil Conservation website, here.
