S.R. 9 Environmental Assessment/Corridor Study

Study Introduction and Overview

The Indiana Department of Transportation has initiated a study of transportation needs and opportunities of the State Route 9 corridor through the city of Greenfield, Indiana. The objectives of this study are to assess the feasibility of improvements and/or other alternatives to SR 9 from SR 234 to US 52 along a corridor ten miles wide. The study will analyze a bypass alternative as well as other options for improving mobility in the Greenfield, Indiana area. Specifically, the study will:

  • Satisfy the requirements of a congressional mandate as outlined in the 1998 Transportation Equity Act of the Twenty First Century (TEA-21) legislation, Section 1602 Program for High Priority Demonstration Projects.
  • Establish the need and purpose for improving SR 9 and/or building a bypass around the City of Greenfield, Indiana.
  • Develop and analyze alternatives which will meet the need and purpose, including a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the transportation impacts of these alternatives.
  • Make recommendations to INDOT for projects of independent utility (if any) which should be programmed for future development and study. Those projects identified for future development will be subject to further National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation as required such as; Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), Environmental Assessment/Finding of No Significant Impact (EA/FONSI), and Categorical Exclusion (CE).
