Materials Engineering

The Materials Engineering Section is responsible for engineering bituminous materials, concrete materials, other materials involved in bridge and pavement construction, pavement designs, new product evaluation committee assignments, and sound wall specifications. Bituminous and concrete materials engineering include the development of specifications, the implementation of new programs, the investigation and recommendation for remediation of construction problems, and the investigation of premature failures. Pavement design engineering includes the evaluation of traffic and materials (including geotechnical recommendations) to design pavement structures that will perform for the design life of the roadway. The new product evaluation committee assignments and the sound wall approved list are special assignments required of the Materials Engineering Section. The new products secretary compiles minutes, manages new products, and notifies other INDOT personnel of new product assignments. The sound wall approved list meeting minimum requirements is maintained by section personnel.
