Police: Fog, speed factors in fatal crash on U.S. 52
CLARKS HILL: - A Lafayette man died when his car went under a semi-tractor trailer in thick fog Thursday morning on U.S. 52.
Ronald H. Koning, 39, of Lafayette, likely was driving too fast for the low visibility, police said, when his car collided with an empty grain trailer hauled by a driver of Lebanon. Koning was driving a 1994 Hyundai Elantra south on U.S. 52 when the crash occurred about 8:38 a.m. The truck driver was driving the semi eastbound on Indiana 28.
Witnesses told police the truck driver stopped at U.S. 52 before attempting to cross the two southbound lanes to head north on 52. The impact of the collision tore off the hood and the entire top of Koning's car at the base of its door posts.
Both vehicles had headlights on at the time of the crash, police said. "With the extent of damage and the depth the passenger car traveled under the trailer, a contributing factor in the crash is unsafe speed for conditions for the passenger car," according to a deputy with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department.
"No braking marks were located at the scene made by the passenger car. This would indicate that due to heavy fog and poor visibility the driver of the passenger car had no time to react.
