Plow Truck Driver Dies on the Job

A state plow truck driver died overnight on the job. He was at a salt barn on the Indianapolis northeast side when he fell off his truck.

Investigators still don't know exactly what happened, but they say 45-year-old Dave Borgmann was emptying his truck at the end of his shift when he fell off the back of the vehicle. Witnesses say one moment they saw Borgmann on the back of the truck, and the next moment he was on the ground.

Investigators say Borgmann could have slipped, he could have been struck by a piece of equipment or he could have had a heart attack or other medical problem.

Borgmann's colleagues are remembering him today as an enthusiastic worker. He was with the department for 22 years, and leaves behind a wife and children.

INDOT is conducting its own investigation.

Snow Plow Driver Dies After Falling Off Truck

Victim With INDOT 22 Years

INDIANAPOLIS - A central Indiana snow plow driver died on the job Thursday night, January 16, 2003.

It happened shortly before midnight at 6350 East 65th St.

The Marion Coroner's Office confirmed that David Borgmann of Greenfield died after falling off a snowplow truck as it was being loaded.

Co-workers told RTV6 that Borgmann would have completed his 22nd year with the Indiana Department of Transportation at the end of January.

Borgmann was completing a 12-hour shift when the accident happened.

An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

Snowplow Driver Death Highlights Dangers of Job

Investigators now say the death of a state snowplow worker overnight wasn't due to natural causes. The Marion County coroner's office says 45-year-old Dave Borgmann died from multiple blunt force injuries.

State police investigators are still looking into the incident. They say Borgmann apparently fell or was knocked off the back of his snow plow as he was finishing up his 12-hour shift at one of the Indiana Department of Transportation's salt barns.

Dave Borgmann's co-workers say he was enthusiastic and fun to work with. "Folks have a long history with David. He's a very, very well liked individual," said a spokesman from INDOT.

It's easy to understand why his co-workers were so shaken when they found out Borgmann died on the job last night. An INDOT spokesman says Borgmann was at the end of his shift, unloading the salt and other snow-fighting materials he'd been carrying all night.

One moment, Borgmann's co-workers saw him standing on the back of his truck. The next moment, one of them found Borgmann on the ground. Investigators are trying to figure out whether he fell or was hit by a piece of equipment.

"We've lost a number of people over the years to accident, mishap. Working along the side of the highway is a difficult chore and we don't know what the circumstances were here, but it's something that our workers have to live with every day," said the INDOT spokesman.

From working 12-hour shifts to dealing with other drivers who don't give them enough room to do their jobs, snowplow drivers all over Indiana say the job can be dangerous.

"Our loads are seven tons of salt in a truck. They're top heavy. [It's] easy to turn'em over, so we have a whole gamut of things that we are up against," said a Kokomo snowplow driver.

Borgmann was with the department for 22 years, and leaves behind a wife and children. INDOT is conducting its own investigation into his death.

Transportation employee dies of multiple injuries

Indiana State Police are investigating the death of a snowplow driver whose body was found next to his snowplow truck about midnight Thursday, January 16, 2003, at an Indiana Department of Transportation's garage, 6350 E. 65th St.

An autopsy performed Friday, January 17, 2003, revealed that Dave Borgmann, 45, died of multiple injuries.

"Something apparently caused him to fall," said the Chief Deputy Coroner.

The accident occurred near the end of Borgmann's shift, said a spokeswoman for the department. Other employees saw him working one minute. A few minutes later, they saw him lying beside his truck, the spokewoman said.

State Police said Borgmann's co-workers tried to revive him while they waited for an ambulance to arrive. He was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he died.

The spokeswoman said Borgmann had worked for the department nearly 22 years. When not driving a plow, he worked in the sign shop for the Greenfield District, which covers Indianapolis and most of central Indiana.
