S.R. 23 Resurfacing

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces preliminary work for the State Road 23 resurfacing project, between Edison Road and Gumwood/Main in South Bend and Mishawaka will start Monday, May 9 and this preliminary work will continue through the middle of June. This part of the project will temporarily close lanes and restrict traffic in short sections between Edison Road and Gumwood/Main. Crews will be patching areas of the road and reconstructing curb ramps in preparation for a complete resurfacing of State Road 23, between Edison Road and Gumwood which is scheduled to begin in the middle of June.

Resurfacing work on State Road 23 will be scheduled in two phases with work being done in only one lane at a time, leaving one lane in each direction and a turn lane for traffic in the construction zone. During those phases, layers of old asphalt will be removed from the road and replaced with new asphalt and a surface coating. New lines will then be painted on the road, completely restoring this stretch of State Road 23.

The $2.8 million dollar project to resurface S.R. 23 is in conjunction with City of Mishawaka's Grape Road Widening Project. S.R. 23 was last resurfaced in 1997 when additional travel lanes were added.

INDOT has been working with local officials to limit the impact to local residents and businesses, including making it a priority to complete the project prior to the start of the school year and the first Notre dame home football game. Crews will also contact business owners prior to major work in their immediate area.

Phase Schedule:

Phase 1:  Edison Road to Cleveland Road (Middle of June through early July)
Phase 2: Cleveland Road to Gumwood Road/Main (Early July through August)
