State Road 61 in Road 61 in the town of Monroe City is currently undergoing a road reconstruction project from the junction of State Road (S.R.) 241 to School House Road at the Blue Jean Center for the 2014 and 2015 construction seasons.
The project will include the installation of an extensive new storm water drainage system, removing approximately two inches of existing roadway, re-establishing the sub-base material under the road, repaving the roadway, and installing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant curb ramps, sidewalks and gutters. The purpose of the project is to aid the Town of Monroe City with resolving drainage issues.
After school year has ended for South Knox Schools, contractor’s crews will close S.R. 61 from the junction of S.R. 241 in Monroe City to S.R. 57 in Petersburg for the installation of the storm drainage system. Emergency vehicles and local traffic will have access to the point of closure. However, through traffic will need to follow the designated detour route, S.R. 241, U.S. Route 50 and S.R. 57.
The first phase of installation will be between the Five Points intersection at the Blue Jean Center to 9th Street in Monroe City. Once this work is complete, crews will close the section between 9th Street and 6th Street. The final phase includes the area between 6th Street and S.R. 241.
It is anticipated the paving portion of the contract will not begin until Spring 2015 with the overall project completion date of October 2015.
The construction contract was awarded to Milestone Contractors, Inc. of Indianapolis, based on the low bid of $3.5 million.
