2008 National Mental Health Conference Unveils New Workshops
Indianapolis, Indiana-(April 14, 2008) – The National Mental Health Conference titled, “Unlock the Mystery: Managing Mental Health from Corrections to Community,” is pleased to present 60 concurrent workshops focused on the topics of Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Sex Offender Treatment. “Unlock the Mystery,” will be comprised of many workshops dedicated to these topics and how they affect and influence a correctional environment as well as the community. Behavioral Disturbed Inmates/Case Study, taught by John Wilson, Ph.D., is a class focused on behavioral management interventions and their effectiveness in reducing recurrent self-injurious behavior for inmates with significant behavioral disturbances. The class will also address principles of consistency, collaboration, and monitoring that are crucial for supporting behavioral change..

A class taught by Adam Deming, Psy.D. will provide attendees with an overview of risk based treatment strategies with sexual offenders. The Indiana Sex Offender Management and Monitoring (SOMM) risk based treatment program will be discussed as will recommendations for implementing risk based strategies with sexual offenders in both correctional and community settings. Various models for conceptualizing and utilizing sex offender risk factors will be presented.

Betty Walton, Ph.D. will lead a discussion about the mental health and addiction services provided through public service systems. The Child and Adolescent Needs and Strength Assessment (CANS, Lyon, 1999) is an informational integration tool which can be used to improve communication across systems, engage youth and families while identifying needs and strengths, support decisions about intervention plans and intensity of services, monitor outcomes and improve the quality of care. This workshop will introduce the tool and share Indiana’s implementation experience.
