Hello everyone. Spring and Summer have just flown by once again. Here is what has been happening at ILEA over the last several months.
Our second annual Training Coordinator’s Conference is quickly approaching. Check our website for registration and further information. November 6th and 7th will be here before you know it so register early.
We have posted several more short segment trainings on the website. There are additional modules on Report Writing and Active Shooter now available.
The Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Associates is progressing and you want to look for exciting news after the first of the year relative to benefits, upcoming meetings and events for your alumni association. See our website for information on how to become a member.
We have made a policy change relative to instructor re-certification. In a nutshell there is no longer a one year grace period after your expiration date. You may request an extension if you have failed to teach the required 36 hours over your three year certification period. Check our website under the Instructor Certification tab and scroll down to RE-CERTIFICATION for more details.
There were three Bills passed in the latest legislative session that have direct impact on the LETB/ILEA. I will provide a short synopsis of each. If you want to read the Bills in their entirety you can go to the Indiana General Assembly website. They are:
HB 1044 - Mandates training on Alzheimer’s and Dementia in the Basic course and for in-service training. We already meet the requirement for the Basic course and are working with the Alzheimer’s Association on developing an e-learning program for the in-service portion. Dr. Paul Whitesell is our point of contact on the project. We will post the training on our website once the development is complete.
SB 582 – Allows the governing board of a hospital to create a police department. Their minimum basic training requirement will be our Tier II course.
SB 1 – Allows school corporations to apply for matching grant funds to hire a School Resource Officer and outlines the requirements of a School Resource Officer. The LETB/ILEA is waiting to receive the report from the School Safety Interim Study Committee, which was established within this Bill, before establishing any training policies or rules relative to School Resource Officers.
Well that brings you up to speed on happenings here at ILEA. Have a safe upcoming Fall and watch for those wheels on the bus going round and round since schools are back in session.Rusty Goodpaster,
