Streamlining Record-Keeping

paperwork
The City of Elkhart Department of Public Works & Utilities currently maintains several sets of mylar quarter section maps that include city limits, sewer, water, and addresses. By maintaining the maps and records in a GIS, time and money are saved by enabling faster updating with the ability to print new quarter sections or view through a web-based GIS viewer.

Several years ago, the City of Elkhart implemented a GIS. One of the goals was reduce the number of quarter section maps that need to be updated. A large number of these maps are over 50 years old and in need of repair.

Updating these maps individually is a time-consuming and tedious process. Work began on inputting the map data into GIS layers, allowing users to superimpose the layers during input. Using a GIS, Elkhart staff can input all the map data into GIS layers and combine these layers to print new quarter section maps as needed.
