Activities

Activities are updated after IGIC board meetings, roughly once per quarter. If you'd like more information about a specific project or initiative in the interim, feel free to contact the workgroup chair or the IGIC Offices.

The Waters Workgroup will be meeting on September 17th to discuss the stakeholders survey and the conflation pilot project.

June 19, 2008

The Waters Workgroup is working with Data Enhancement Services (DES), Inc. on a pilot project to enhance a portion of the high-resolution National Hydrography Dataset for Hamilton County. DES will conflate the high-resolution NHD to a combination of the 2005 digital orthophotography products (orthophotos, color infra-red, digital elevation model, digital surface model) and local Hydrography data from Hamilton County. The project should lead to a ballpark estimate for a statewide conflation project and also provide examples of differences between using the various data sources. Also, a subcommittee of the workgroup will be formed to analyze and report on the stakeholder survey results (71 respondents).

The Waters Workgroup is continuing its work toward updating the Waters Framework Data Plan. Several in the group participated in US Geological Survey (USGS) Training on Maintaining the National Hydrography Dataset. The training focused on repairing topology errors, and inconsistent naming issues. As a result of the training, fixes were made to several of the sub-regions, and USGS is working to verify and complete changes. A few sub-regions still need repairs. Further, long-term maintenance will involve repairing geographic and attribute errors.

The Waters Workgroup is continuing its work toward updating the Waters Framework Data Plan. As a result of the training, fixes were made to several of the subregions, and USGS is working to verify and complete those changes. A few subregions still need repairs. Further, long-term maintenance will involve repairing geographic and attribute errors. The group has also posted a web-survey to evaluate the needs of stakeholders. All who use water-related data are encouraged to complete the survey.

January 17, 2008

The Waters Workgroup is focusing on two key elements: creating the stakeholder survey and the US Geological Survey training for maintaining the National Hydrography Dataset. The latter is scheduled for January 15-17 at The Polis Center at IUPUI. Participants will include representatives from State agencies (Departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Management), local government (Hamilton County), watershed groups (St. Joseph River Basin Commission), universities (IUPUI), and IGIC. The workgroup also held a stakeholder survey subcommittee meeting focusing on both what information to gather and how to gather it.

November 15, 2007

The Waters Framework Data Workgroup is working on setting up a hands-on training session on National Hydrography Dataset Stewardship. The US Geological Survey will be conducting the training, likely to be held in January. The group is also working collecting information regarding water data user needs. The draft data plan will be available on the Workgroup website.
The Waters Framework Data Workgroup met on October 23rd to continue drafting the data plan. David Nail, US Geological Survey, presented an excellent review of the National Hydrography Dataset, including its feature classes and event themes. The group will now be focusing on identifying stakeholders and their needs. The next meeting is scheduled for November 30th in Indianapolis.

September 20, 2007

The Waters Workgroup held its first meeting on September 17th. The consensus was to adopt the high-resolution National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) for Indiana as the "starting point" for Indiana's waters framework dataset. However, topics that need to be addressed are which of the high-resolution NHD layers to include, which attributes, and whether other layers need to be added. That topic will be one of the items for the next meeting. The group is now drafting updates to the 2001 plan. The next meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 23rd, at the NRCS Office in Indianapolis.
