June 19, 2008
The Bloomington Convention Center has been selected for the Annual GIS Conference. The dates for the conference will be February 17 & 18, 2009.
Accommodations for rooms have been set up with the Bloomington Courtyard by Marriott and the Hilton Garden Inn in Bloomington.
We will be using facilities at Indiana University for some of the training sessions. The conference schedule will include workshops
and training that look to be some of the best the conference has provided to date.
April 17, 2008
The Conference Committee had close to record attendance and plans are already under way for next year. The Bloomington Convention Center
has been selected for the 2009 conference.
February 18, 2008
Finalized plans have been made. This year we may have a record number of attendees. We are looking forward to a
very productive and successful conference.
January 17, 2008
The schedule for the conference has been finalized. All of this year's presenters have been notified of their "accepted
status," the abstracts have been placed in the schedule, and both are online. A new Gold Sponsor speaker track has
been added to the conference. A dinner-theatre-style activity is planned during the plenary in which the idea of
selling geospatial data will be put "on trial." Everyone is working to pull the final touches together. The
committee will be meeting at the Hyatt on January 23rd to do a final walk-through and to finalize planned projects.
November 15, 2007
The 2008 Conference Committee met on October 10th at the Woolpert Offices in downtown Indianapolis. A
new logo was presented for approval on all conference related materials. The 'Call for Abstracts' went out to
the public on September 21st, with a deadline of November 5th. Several abstracts have been received so far and
more are expected as the deadline nears. Workshop ideas were decided upon, with each committee member tasked to
arrange the speakers for the topics assigned to them. We will be pursuing two very good options for a keynote
speaker this year. The conference web page has been updated with the latest information for the public's use.
Hotel dates and rates have been locked down and talk of where to host the 2009 conference has already begun.
The next conference committee meeting is scheduled for November 16th at the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
September 20, 2007
The 2008 IGIC Conference Committee recently met on September 12th. The logo for the conference "Connecting
Communities through GIS" was approved and the call for abstracts will go out to the public the week of
September 17th. Hotel plans, costs and associated information were finalized on September 13th. The
conference schedule is set and the web page is in the process of being updated for the public's use.
We are expecting this year's conference to be the best yet, with a new venue, higher quality presentations
and workshops and some different activities throughout. The next conference committee meeting will be on October 10th.
July 19, 2007
Brooke Gajownik has agreed to be co-chair for the 2008 conference. An initial meeting has been scheduled to begin
work on scheduling speakers and plan for next year. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency in downtown
Indianapolis on February 19th-20th.
March 12, 2007
Registration for the 2007 conference is going well. The new online system has been well-received. As of
February 27, 2007, more than 290 people have registered. The exhibitor response was very positive, and
there is increased sponsorship. Though the registration numbers are slightly lower than last year, the
conference will remain profitable.
Janaury 18, 2007
Registration for the 2007 conference is open; the online system is available and working well. As of January 9th,
there are 31 registrants, and 12 exhibitor booths reserved. A contract has been signed with the Indiana Geological
Survey for material production and on-site staffing. Session topics and speakers have been scheduled. We are
finalizing the workshop presenters and keynote speaker.
This year the poster contest has been expanded to include a category for K-12 students. Prizes include ESRI products
and Target gift certificates. College students will still receive cash awards.
Board members are asked to sign up to moderate at least one session at the conference. The schedule will be
distributed at the January 18th board meeting.
November 16, 2006
The committee has been working on preparations for the 2007 conference. The call for abstracts has been
sent out, along with exhibitor and sponsor information. The committee is looking for a local keynote speaker,
as well as volunteers for a number of internal activities. A new contract will need to be signed with the Indiana
Geological Survey for preparation of conference materials and on-site staffing. In addition, a change of venue for
the 2008 conference has been finalized, and contracts signed.
September 21, 2006
- Contract for the 2008 conference at Hyatt approved by IGIC Executive Board, the signed contract has been delivered to the hotel.
- Call for abstracts reviewed and approved.
- Kent submitted a written report. Submitted a PDF of the vendor space floor plan. Jenny has revised the forms to reflect
2007 conference and dates. Need to confirm dates and times for setup and teardown. Jenny also noted that it is currently
taking 5 days to have changes made to the web site through Indiana Interactive (New AccessIndiana Vendor).

July 20, 2006
The conference committee is hard at work on the 2007 conference at Union station. We are investigating a
possible move to the Hyatt in 2008.
May 18, 2006
After two years of outstanding work, EJ McNaughton has stepped down as chair of the conference committee. Irv
Goldblatt has agreed to be the chair for the 2007 conference. The committee is looking at a couple of significant
changes for the 2007 conference. 1.) In an effort to provide more advanced topics for the workshops, presenters will
be directly solicited and offered free registration. We also have the ability with the new eCommerce site to charge
for individual sessions, if needed. Less advanced topics will still be offered, as the conference is and will continue to be an
inclusive forum. 2.) The conference will be held on Monday and Tuesday, which may affect the timing
of some of the traditionally pre-conference events.
March 6, 2006
The Conference committee is putting the final touches on what looks to be another successful conference.
The conference seems to be on budget (under in some areas) as our attendance and vendor numbers are
looking as good as or better than the previous 2 years.
The effort and dedication by this group should not go unnoticed, special thanks to Jenny D. (
everything), Brooke G. (abstracts and Workshops, Jill S-S (everything), Layne Young (Pre Conf mixer,
Ideas and Media), Kent Park (Vendors), John Hannel (Vendors), Laura Haley (Geocache), Kurt Babcock
(Geocache and On site coordination), Lorraine Wright (Students), Irv Goldblatt (Food), and Mike Machlan (Awards).
This is really a special group and I have had to rely on them (maybe too much). Thank you, Thank you, and
Thank you!!!!
November 17, 2005
Conference planning is underway. Committee is busy planning for another statewide conference in March. We are
developing breakout sessions, workshops, conference theme and logo. We are also investigating the possibility of
accepting registrations online, and hope to offer it this year. The call for abstracts went out, and the first
of the pages for the conference are online as well. We have tentatively confirmed keynote speaker.
September 19, 2005
The conference committee has started meeting again! We have made our duty assignments and are beginning to
work on them. The call for abstracts should be out within the month, as should the website with all of the
pertinent details. The hotel has worked very hard to give us the space and times we need to put on a
successful conference despite all of the activities in downtown Indy this spring. We will again be
holding the conference downtown at the Crowne Plaza (Union Station) on March 7-8 (Tues - Wed).
July 21, 2005
After taking the summer to recuperate, the Conference Committee will hold its initial meeting for the
2006 event in August.
May 16, 2005
The 2005 conference was a definite success! Items to address for the 2006 conference:
- We have signed the contracts for March 7-8 2006 and March 13-14 2007 with the Crowne Plaza.
- We need to reexamine the current role filled by Indiana Geological Survey. Specifically we want to look
at alternatives for handling registration and the finances.
- Results of the attendee survey have been collated.
Everyone is taking a little time off to recharge for next year's conference, and we should start back in July.
March 15, 2005
We are currently wrapping up a
very successful 2005 GIS Conference. The 2005 committee will have a wrap-up
meeting(s) and then take a well deserved hiatus before beginning the 2006 conference planning sometime this summer.
Check back then for updates and meeting times.
