Indiana Protection & Advocacy Services

Indiana Disability Rights

Indiana Disability Rights > Executive Director Executive Director

Welcome to Indiana Disability Rights, the service arm of the Indiana Protection & Advocacy Services (IPAS) Commission. I am glad you are here. I would like to introduce you to this agency and its vital mission. First, let me introduce myself. I am Dawn Adams. I was appointed by the Commission to serve as Executive Director in 2014. Since then, I have had the privilege of leading a talented group of professionals who fight daily for equality and justice for people with disabilities. Together, we fulfill our mission to “protect and promote the rights of individuals with disabilities, through empowerment and advocacy.”

One in five people in Indiana has a disability. Most of us will have a disability at some point in our lives. People with disabilities overcome challenges every day. But as a wise person once told me, “The biggest challenge I face isn’t a wheelchair or a cane; my biggest challenge is people’s perceptions about me.” Unfortunately, discrimination against people with disabilities is a daily occurrence. Things most Americans take for granted, like a free appropriate education, the right to be able to access public places, the right to vote, and the right to have proper tools to do your job, are often withheld from people with disabilities.

Not only is discrimination offensive, it is against the law. Some may believe providing an accommodation to people with disabilities is just a generous gesture. It’s not. It’s the law. My team of attorneys and advocates is deeply committed to ensuring every person in the state of Indiana has their civil rights respected. If your rights are violated, Indiana Disability Rights can help. If you or someone you know has a disability and needs help, I encourage you to reach out to us.

If you feel as passionately about the rights of people with disabilities as I do, I want to hear from you. If you would like to get involved in the work of the Commission and Indiana Disability Rights, send me an email at ExecutiveDirector@IndianaDisabilityRights.org.

Thank you for visiting!

Dawn Adams
