Who is incarcerated?

  • 929 Students Currently Enrolled
  • 1,971 New Enrollments throughout FY06-07
  • 1,251 Releases throughout FY06-07
  • Ages 12-21
  • 39.8% Minority compared to the public school state average of 23.2%

What are the Educational Needs of Students?

  • 63% test below 6th grade in math and/or language arts
  • 42% qualify for special education services
    • 28% of students with special needs are identified as Emotionally Disabled
    • 58% of students with special needs are identified as Learning Disabled
  • Educationally “out of sequence” with their age-appropriate peers:
    • 52% are legal 9th graders (less than 10 credits and two semesters of high school)
    • 22% are legal 10th graders (more than two semesters of high school, regardless of number of credits)

Who participates in Correctional Education?

  • Students attend school 251 days per year, 5 days per week

What are the outcomes?

  • 274 GED completions
  • 3,110 High School Credits earned
  • 869 students earned high school credits
  • 63% transition to school/alternative education/post-secondary/military

What educational services do facilities offer?

  • Access to the Indiana General High School Diploma
  • Career Technical Education (at Pendleton, South Bend and Logansport)
  • GED

How are Correctional Education programs staffed?

  • Clerical and transitional support funded through federal grants
  • 69 classroom teachers:
    • All are highly qualified, or have submitted an HQ Plan of Action as outlined by the Indiana Department of Education
    • All certified staff members in juvenile facility schools possess special education certification
    • 10 certified school administrators and support staff
