State Land Office

The State Land Office was established in 1887 by order of the General Assembly. The State Land Office serves as the repository for deeds and plats of land previously or currently owned by the State, with the exception of state highways and right-of-ways, which are housed in the Indiana Department of Transportation, and State universities, which are kept at each university (IC 4-20.5-2-4).

The State owns 377,000 acres of land, which accounts for 1.6% of Indiana 's total acreage. The office maintains approximately 6,000 deeds and draft overview maps of state properties in a GIS (Geographic Information System).

The office also:

  • Approves the legal description of real property prior to purchase or sale by state agencies.
  • Provides abstract records and documents from State Archives, Court houses for the purpose of identifying State owned property.
  • Provides prints of aerial photography to cities, counties, state agencies, private companies, and individuals. Prints are available for $10.00 per sheet.

The Land Office is open to the public during regular business hours for walk-in service. The Office is located on the fourth foor of Indiana Government Center South, room W-479.
