Leased Facility Energy Upgrade Project

The Indiana State Department of Health's (ISDH) leased offices located at 2 N. Meridian in Indianapolis has implemented many energy conservation practices and provisions at this Central Office location, as outlined below:

  • The building presently enjoys the latest in energy conservation technology controlled by an energy management system. This system controls lighting as well as air handlers for the building. For example, all lights, except those connected to the emergency lighting system, are turned off from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., Tuesday through Friday. As we share this space with retail tenants who are open until 9 p.m. and housekeeping duties are performed after normal business hours, the 11 p.m. time appears to be appropriate. On Saturdays the emergency management system is on from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is turned off completely all day Sunday. On Monday morning the lights come back on at 5 a.m., and air handling comes on at 3 a.m. to cool the building off from the prior day's shutdown.

  • All lighting in the building can be manually over-ridden for a 1-hour period of time when the emergency management system has these lights shut down. In addition to the emergency management system, 2 N. Meridian's fluorescent fixtures meet the Power & Light Company's emergency efficiency ratings which results in extremely low energy usage.

  • The air handling system is a variable speed air handler which maximizes cooling. The system also allows for as little as 5% outside air exchange with building conditioned air. In addition, one air handler provides service to the Lower Level through the 3rd floor and the other from the 4th to the 8th floor. The building owner has agreed to shut down the air handler serving floors 4 through 8 from 11 p.m. Friday to Monday at 3 a.m.

  • Our landlord monitors all of the above points to insure the minimal power consumption. Two N. Meridian also has an emergency power generator in case of blackouts. It is designed to come on within 15 seconds of a complete power outage. The emergency generator will operate all emergency fluorescent lighting, one passenger elevator, and all emergency systems within the building, including fire alarms and the notifier system, as well as water pumps providing water to a 5,000 gallon tank which provides gravity flow for the fire sprinkling system.

While the owner has taken reasonable steps to insure energy efficiency and the safety of tenants, there are steps that ISDH staff can take to reduce energy consumption:

  • ISDH staff can turn off their computer monitors at night when they leave. If the staff fail to do this, Building Security will.

  • All computers, with the exception of those equipped with fax modems with a history of receiving fax messages after hours, should be shut down at the end of the business day.

  • Staff should turn off lights in conference rooms, offices and filing rooms when not in use.
