The purpose of the Surveys Section is to provide the water quality and hydrological data required for the assessment of Indiana's waters by conducting Watershed/Basin Surveys and Stream Reach Surveys. Such surveys determine the extent to which water quality standards are being met and whether the fishable, swimmable and water supply uses are being maintained.
In 1996, the Section began a five (5) year synoptic study of the State's ten (10) major watersheds. Information from these studies will be integrated with data from biological and nonpoint source studies as well as the Fixed Station Monitoring Program to make a major assessment of the State's waters. Information derived from this strategy will contribute significantly to improved planning processes throughout the Office of Water Quality. This plan should initiate the development of interrelated action plans which encompass the wide range of responsibilities, such as rulemaking, permitting, compliance, non-point source issues, and wastewater treatment facility oversight.
