Criterion is a global supplier of premier catalysts used by petroleum refiners to make clean burning petroleum products. In addition to high quality catalysts, they supply advanced process technology and experience to optimize the operations of their refining and petrochemical customers worldwide. Their home office is in Houston, Texas. The Michigan City facility produces Alumina powder, which is a raw material, used in the production of catalysts.
Criterion initiated a project to reduce the amount of off specification Alumina powder that would require disposal in an industrial landfill. The off specification powder was advertised on the Indiana Materials Exchange. A manufacturer located in East Chicago, IN responded to the advertisement with an interest in the off specification powder and decided that the material would be suitable for use in their product. They use the powder as a filler material for their product which is sold to steel mills for use in their furnaces to help produce appropriate heat levels.
By utilizing the resources available through the Indiana Materials Exchange, Criterion reduced their waste costs and the burden on ever shrinking landfill space, as well as allowing an economic advantage for the company using the material. The table below illustrates the environmental benefit of this arrangement in the year 2001.
