In January of 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) finalized regulations that affect paint stripping and spray coating operations. The following operations are affected by this regulation:

  • Paint Stripping using materials containing Methylene Chloride;
  • Autobody Refinishing including mobile equipment; and,
  • Spray coating of metal and/or plastic parts or products that are not automobiles or mobile equipment.

Owners or operators may petition U.S. EPA for exemption from this regulation if none of the coatings contain any of the target HAPs listed above. The petition must be submitted to and approved by U.S. EPA.
