
Thomas W. Easterly was appointed Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management on January 10, 2005, by Governor Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr.
As commissioner, Mr. Easterly is responsible for all aspects of IDEM, the state agency responsible for protecting, preserving and improving the quality of Indiana air, water and land.
Mr. Easterly has worked on environmental issues in both government and industry for thirty years. He was President of Environmental Business Strategies, Inc., an environmental consulting firm he started in 2002. He has held the positions of Manager, Environmental Planning & Improvement for NiSource, a utility holding company, and Superintendent of Environmental Services for Bethlehem Steel's Burns Harbor Division in Northwest Indiana.
Before joining Bethlehem in 1987, Mr. Easterly held various engineering positions in the Air and Solid and Hazardous Waste Divisions of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
He is a past chairman of the Air and Waste Management Association's Iron and Steel Committee and a past President of the Board of Directors of the Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center.
He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineering, a Qualified Environmental Professional and a Professional Engineer.
He attended college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy , New York where he received a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Urban-Environmental Studies.
