Who May Need a License for Asbestos Removal?

Those working to remove regulated asbestos must be licensed to work in Indiana. There are various required levels of experience, training, and fees associated with each type of license. There are two ways to obtain an asbestos license:

  1. An applicant can go online and follow the instructions and have a credit card ready for payment, or
  2. An applicant can submit a completed application provided by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) via mail.

All applications must be completed in writing and submitted to the IDEM Office of Air Quality, Operations Branch (Asbestos Section), for processing. Please note that, under Indiana Administrative Code 326 IAC 18-1-5(g), IDEM will not process applications on a walk-in basis or over the telephone - this means that one should not expect to submit their application for an asbestos removal license and receive their license the same day. Timeframes for the processing of applications are given in the table below and are estimates based on the condition that all requirements of the application are met.

To obtain an application call the Asbestos Licensing Program at (317) 233-3861 or Toll Free at (888) 574-8150. Applications can also be downloaded from this web page. See the section “Application Forms” provided below.

The following chart gives the license type, the minimum time an applicant should allow for processing, and the estimated processing times that applications usually take to process.
