Areas that are designated nonattainment under a National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) are eligible to be re-designated to attainment once they meet a specified set of criteria, which includes monitoring attainment of the standard it was designated under. Once eligible, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) can petition the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) for the area to be re-designated to attainment and classified as maintenance.
