On Tuesday, October 11 between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM, IDEM will be releasing another updated version of the VFC Public Search. The VFC now has mapping functionality for Document and Facility Searches. IDEM has also expanded the functionality of full text search. There may be some interruption during this time.
Please take a moment to complete the VFC Survey and help IDEM continue to improve the VFC.
If you know the specific Document Number or the Agency Interest ID, you can now search for them directly using the new search field at the top right of the search page. The Agency Interest ID search returns all matches so you don't have to enter the full number before searching.
IDEM provides enhanced access to public records through the VFC. However, IDEM sometimes receives records that contain confidential information. When a record contains both public and confidential information, the agency is required to make the public portions of the record available for inspection and copying. Such records will be made available on the VFC with any confidential information redacted.
Pursuant to the Access to Public Records Act (APRA), IC § 5-14-3-2(f), the IDEM provides enhanced access to agency public records through the VFC. The VFC is an online repository for a vast amount of the agency’s public records. IDEM staff continue to scan records daily. IDEM makes every attempt to maintain current and accurate information in this online electronic public record repository.
IDEM’s VFC is accessible online, twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week. The VFC has more than 2 million public records, with more added daily. The VFC currently contains records for, but not limited to:
If you should need to view records, have records copied, or have problems locating documents in the VFC, please make a records request using the IDEM Request for a Public Record (State Form 55542, available on the IDEM Forms page). A request may be submitted via e-mail, facsimile, U.S. mail, or in person.
The ORM is responsible for managing and maintaining the agency’s physical and virtual files in addition to responding to public record requests made to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). IDEM maintains the Virtual File Cabinet (VFC) to provide enhanced access to public records. The VFC is an online repository for a vast amount of the agency’s public records.
A: Select the field from the dropdown menu. Enter the criteria for the new field in the text box to the right. Click the Search button to perform the search.
A: The list of facilities returned include all agency interests -- past and present. Not all agency interests have documents in VFC.
A: Use partial values in the search fields for Facility Search (Examples: For address use "123 Way" instead of "123 Way Street"; for primary name use "XYZ" instead of "XYZ Factory Corporation").
A: Perform a "Facility Search". The Agency Interest ID in the results is the unique value that IDEM uses for identifying a specific location.
A: In order to fully answer this question, you will need to submit an IDEM formal records request.
A: IDEM has a published list of acronyms on its public site. This list is up to date and includes additional information and links for the various programs that IDEM supports. You may find documents and document fields that are abbreviated using acronyms. This list will assist in clarifying meaning. If you need additional assistance you can contact the ORM directly.
The ORM is committed to providing resources that meet your needs. Please take five (5) minutes to complete a short, anonymous survey. Your valuable feedback will be used to help us continue to improve the VFC public record search, public record request process, customer service and your overall experience.
If you should need to view agency public records, have public records copied, or have problems locating public records in the VFC, please submit a public record request using IDEM’s Request For Public Record (State Form 55542, available on the IDEM Forms page) form. A public record request may be submitted via e-mail, U.S. mail, or in person.
