Chapter 6 - Section III: What Types of Permits Does IDEM Issue?
IDEM issues the following types of environmental permits:
Construction permits:
allow sources or facilities that emit or discharge pollutants into the air or water to be built. Construction permits ensure that plans and specification for new facilities meet current environmental standards. Sources or facilities obtaining a construction permit may also need an operating permit before they begin operation.
Operating permits:
allow sources or facilities that emit or discharge pollutants to operate. These permits require sources and facilities be operated in a way that meets current environmental standards.
Construction and operation permits:
serve as both in one permit. Generally, minor sources of air pollution may construct and operate under the same IDEM permit. Similarly, solid and hazardous waste permits allow facilities to construct and operate under a single permit.
