Chapter 4 - Section I: Regulating the Environment

IDEM is the state agency responsible for implementing federal and state regulations regarding certain activities that could impact human health or the environment. Through compliance assistance, incentive programs and educational outreach, the agency encourages and aids business and citizens in protecting Hoosiers and our environment.

There are many activities that could potentially impact Indiana’s neighborhoods or otherwise affect the environment. IDEM regulates commercial and industrial activities including: manufacturing, coal mines, gravel pits, grain or petroleum storage sites, car wash facilities, hog barns, truck and auto repair shops, dry cleaners, power plants, open dumps, uncovered salt piles, and backyard trash fires. IDEM does not regulate noise, odor, lights, carbon, fertilizer, chemicals and chemical applications, and drainage.
