IDEM > Environmental Cleanup > State Cleanup > State Cleanup: Immediate Removals Program State Cleanup: Immediate Removals Program

The Immediate Removals Program provides time critical removal of pollutants that are considered an imminent and substantial threat to the public health and/or the environment. For Immediate Removal purposes, "time critical" is defined as action that needs to be initiated within six (6) months. The goal of the program is to separate the hazard from potential receptors. Please note that this program is intended to remove immediate dangers; not to perform a full scale remediation effort.

Typical sites addressed by the Immediate Removals Program include abandoned drums of hazardous materials and/or waste, tire piles, and various abandoned industrial and commercial facilities.

Typical actions conducted at these sites include installation of fencing, sampling and disposing of drums, and source removal. Source removal could include contaminated soil, transformers, lab packs, lagoons and other hazards. Staff has also arranged for alternate drinking water for residential drinking water wells impacted by contaminants at abandoned properties.
