The Emergency Response (ER) Section was created to address environmental emergencies and has no mechanism for long term remedial oversight. In 1998, it was recognized that such a mechanism was needed to address ER sites requiring long-term remediation. Therefore, these sites are referred to State Cleanup for evaluation, as well as management of the remediation process. Remedial Response sites are now the majority of projects within the State Cleanup Section. Sites may also enter this program by referrals from other IDEM and government offices, calls from the public, etc.
