IDEM > Environmental Cleanup > Risk-based Closure > Toolbox > RISC Default Closure Tool RISC Default Closure Tool

The RISC Default Closure Tool is a Microsoft Excel based spreadsheet. IDEM released Version 1.2 of the tool on May 1, 2009 as a means of providing access to Default Closure Levels located in Appendix 1 of the RISC Technical Guidance Document. However, IDEM now maintains a webpage of IDEM Screening and Closure Levels that links to Excel versions of most of its risk-based closure tables.

If you decide to use the Default Closure Tool, IDEM recommends that you download the tool and run it from your computer. It may not work properly from an internet browser.

The RISC Default Closure Tool has five major functions:

  • View Sheets: This simply allows users to view the standard tables as they appear in Appendix I.
  • Contaminant Lookup: Contaminant Lookup allows the user to choose a contaminant from a pull-down list and generate a printer-friendly sheet that contains all the data located in Tables A, B, and F for that compound.
  • Generate Custom Sheet: This allows users to select the contaminants and parameters that are of interest and to produce a table with only those selections. For example, a user could produce a table with all the common petroleum constituents and have it list both the industrial and residential closure criteria.
  • Show Hide Contaminants: This function allows users to truncate the standard closure level tables found in Appendix I. For example, if a user were to select a subset of the contaminants from the Show/Hide Contaminants form and then click the “Show” button when they went to view Table A,B, or F from the “View Sheets” box, the tables would display only the contaminants that had been selected.
  • Restore Tables: Clicking this button will restore all tables to their original, unabridged state.

The RISC Default Closure Tool works with the following versions of Microsoft Office: Office 2000, Office XP, and Office 2003. The RISC Default Closure Tool does not appear to work with any version of Office for Mac.
