2007 State Wide Celebration

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission and the Indiana Civil Rights Commission will present the Sixteenth Annual Statewide Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday celebration on January 11, 2007. The theme for this year's program is "Civil Rights Voices of Indiana: Passing the Torch," in partnership with:

Madame Walker Theatre

More than 700 middle and high school students will travel to the historic Madame Walker Theatre Center in Indianapolis for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Youth Summit featuring noted Indiana actor, Jonathan Thompson whose stories will examine the history of civil rights in American and ways to further Dr. King's legacy today. Afterwards, students will be placed in small facilitated groups for discussion about discrimination and ways to combat this social ill in the school setting. The Youth Summit is by invitation only.

Noon
The statewide celebration will be held in the North Atrium of the Capitol Rotunda in Indianapolis and will feature the public premier of film finalists from the 2006 Middle/High School Civil Rights Voices of Indiana Film Competition sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission. The school submitting the winning film will receive the first Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission "Passing the Torch Award." Hurley Goodall, former state legislator (Muncie) will receive the Indiana Civil Rights Commission's highest award, "The Spirit of Justice." Distinguished Educator Brandon Cosby of the University of Indianapolis will charge attendees with "passing the civil rights torch" to our youth.

Guests can view the "Civil Rights Movement in America" Picture Gallery and meet actors, directors and producers from both the winning and first runner-up submissions to the Civil Rights Voices of Indiana Film Competition at a reception immediately following in the South Atrium of the Capitol Rotunda.

Governor Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, Representative Vanessa Summers, Judge Tanya Walton-Pratt, Gregory Kellam Scott, Rev. Jack Hartford, Rev. Ivan Hicks, Krash Krew Company, Brandon Cosby and Jonathan Thompson.
