The Education Steering Committee works to develop public policies that ensure equal opportunity in education for all students and is comprised of: elected officials; both Indiana Civil Rights Commission and Department of Education personnel; university professors; school superintendents; and community leaders. The committee was created by resolution of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission at the July 2006 meeting.

Current Initiatives

The focus of the Education Steering Committee is to find ways to:

  • Reduce racial/ethnic/disability disparities in school-administered discipline
  • Reduce the number of school-administered suspension/expulsions overall
  • Reduce the number of school discipline referrals overall
