In early May letters will be sent out to area High Schools requesting students to compose a 2 page essay themed around the 2016 Bicentennial and specifically oriented towards what “Proud to be an American” means to them. Once collected, these student essays will be judged by a panel of area residents and the top three essays will be selected for scholarship awards. On July 2, 2016 aboard the tourist vessel, “The Madam Carroll”, with 450 area veterans and family members aboard the winners will be announced. The top essay will be read to the veterans by the student writer.
