Legacy Projects > Historical Church Tour Historical Church Tour

photo 1

The 19 churches on this tour offer a unique look at the early religious buildings built before 1900. The church became a social as well as a religious center in many early communities. It was a place for socials and suppers, for Christmas entertainment, for Sunday school parties, and neighborhood gatherings. Of the 19 churches, Orland Congregational Church is the oldest standing church in Steuben County. It was built in 1852. The Powers Church, built in 1876, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The tour celebrates the inclusiveness of Christianity and the tenacity of early settlers while creating a legacy for our youth.
