Legacy Projects > Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier and Ben-Hur Bard Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier and Ben-Hur Bard

WTIU Public Television is producing a documentary on a little known Hoosier legend, Lew Wallace. This 60-minute documentary television program entitled “Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier/Ben Hur Bard” will be broadcast statewide during 2016. Lew Wallace was born in Brookville, IN, in 1827. He was an inventor, painter, a general in the Civil War, head of the tribunal appointed to try the Lincoln conspirators, Governor of New Mexico Territory and is perhaps the most renowned for authoring the book Ben-Hur. The book is still one of the most reprinted books in history and resulted in a block-buster play, novel and three movies with a remake coming in the next year!

Few men participated so completely in the post-bellum American experience of the 19th century. Yet, many Hoosiers are not familiar with the name Lew Wallace. The completed television special will be offered to all Indiana Public Broadcasting Television Stations located in Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Merrillville, Muncie and South Bend/Elkhart. The program will also be available online and on devices such as ROKU after 2016.
