A 1998 study estimated that over 223,000 Hoosiers have a co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorder. Traditionally, treatment for mental illness and treatment for substance abuse developed in parallel with little interaction between the two. IDDT is a tratment program that addresses both disorders in an individual. This supports the President's Commission on Mental Health via the Implementation for Evidence-based Practices.
Purpose: Integrated Dual Diagnosis Treatment (IDDT) is designed specifically for the individual consumer who has both serious mental illness and substance abuse disorders. Substance use disorders (SUDs) are present in 40 - 60% of consumers with serious mental illness (SMI). Consumers with both SMI and SUDs experience poor outcomes, such as higher rates of psychiatric relapse and hospitalization, poor physical health, homelessness, legal problems and victimization.
Implementation: The Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Center of Indiana, located at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, received a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) Community Action Grant for $133,888 to plan and implement the expansion of the IDDT model in Indiana. A State Advisory Board was established as a part of this process. Co-Chairs of the Board are Charles Boyle of the Family and Social Services Administration's Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA) and Craig Andler of Choices.
Outcomes: As of July 1, 2004, 6 IDDT sites are in existence across the State:
