Project: Green Roof Installation

Grant:$8,500 from the Public Facilities Improvement Grant Program
This project is centered around the creation of a first of a kind “green roof” or eco-roof in
Indianapolis as well as the installation of additional roof insulation as part of
a full energy efficient and “green” renovation of a long vacant, highly visible and
important 2,000 square foot commercial storefront building in the southeast corner of
East 10th & Rural Streets on the near eastside of Indianapolis.
Studies have repeatedly
shown that green roofs can help reduce summer cooling costs in low one-story buildings
from 25% to 75%, and winter heating costs from 5% to 20%. |

The live roof is flourishing, with minimal watering. |
One corner of the roof has been left open for mechanicals (which will be screened). |

Name: Hoover Farms Wind Project
Project: Wind turbine installation
Location: Tipton, Indiana
Grant:$35,000 from the Alternative Power & Energy grant program
Debbie Hoover was awarded a grant to install wind turbines at her Tipton Indiana Farm. Hoover wanted the turbines to power crop tunnels, where the family grows salad greens. The grant paid for about half the cost of the installation. The Hoover Farm is serviced by Duke Energy. When electricity is being generated by the wind turbines, the farm's electric usage (and their bill) is offset by that amount.
The five Skystream 1.8 Kilowatt wind turbines operate when wind speeds are between 8 and 140 mph. Wwind speeds and power generation will be tracked by computer. |

Debbie Hoover recevied the grant in December, 2006. Construction had to wait for Spring. The turbines were installed on May 13, 2007. |
