Indiana Department of Revenue

DOR > Tax Talk Blog > Department Continues to Stop ID Theft Department Continues to Stop ID Theft

May 7, 2014 – TaxTalk Blog

The April 15 tax deadline may have passed, but the identity protection program continues protecting Hoosiers from identity theft and the state from tax fraud. The Indiana Department of Revenue has stopped more than $4.3 million in attempted identity theft as of May 7.

The department will now begin to investigate each uncompleted Identity Confirmation Quiz that has surpassed the allotted time to be taken.

The department suspects it will find a large amount of identity theft in the uncompleted Identity Confirmation Quizzes because identity thieves are unlikely to take the quiz. Therefore, a high percentage of the returns will likely be fraudulent. When reviewing the returns, the department also will look for patterns amongst fraudulent cases.

Identity thieves don’t stop just because tax season is over. The department wants all Hoosiers to protect their personal information year-round. Remember, identity theft criminals search for victims’ information in many places including:

  • Unsecure Wi-Fi connections
  • Trash containers
  • Spam or fishing emails

Review more identity protection tips at www.in.gov/dor/5064.htm. Hoosiers also can visit the department’s Stop ID Theft website or use the Indiana Attorney General’s ID Theft Prevention Toolkit to further protect their identities.
