Registering your interstate trucking business

Today we have part two of the three-part summer series from our Motor Carrier Services division. Guest blogger Trish is dishing up tips on licensing requirements for carriers who drive trucks through Indiana and at least one other state.
Have you ever wondered what steps you need to take to get your interstate trucking business registered with the Indiana Motor Carrier Services division? (Interstate meaning travel that covers more than one state.) Do you need to set up a new account for your trucking business? Are you tired of going from office to office and state to state to get everything you need to get to your final destination?
Well, at Motor Carrier Services we have a One Stop Shop to meet all your trucking needs. Just follow the three steps below and you’ll quickly be legal to operate your commercial vehicle anywhere in the country.
Step 1
- You will need Operating Authority if you are hauling for hire or if your services are leased to someone and you’re driving under their Authority. You must supply a copy of a valid lease agreement.
- Complete a Business Authorization and Safety-1 application to apply for a USDOT number.
- If you have your own Operating Authority, you must complete a Business Authorization and Safety-2 application to apply for your Unified Carrier Registration. We encourage you to go online and process your Unified Carrier Registration at http://www.ucr.in.gov/ .

Step 2
- You will need to complete an International Registration Plan application.
- You may download the application from our Web site. Go to forms and publications and click on International Registration Plan, which will display a list of forms that you will need to complete; or
- Call us at (317)615-7340 to have an application mailed or faxed to you.
Make sure you send the following documents with your application to avoid a delay in processing:
- International Registration Plan Schedules A, B and G.
- A copy of the title and/or lease agreement if applicable.
- A copy of the 2290 Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Schedule 1 stamped received from the Internal Revenue Service.
- A copy of prior registration.
- Proof of residency.

Step 3
You will need an International Fuel Tax Agreement account or be leased to someone driving under their International Fuel Tax Agreement account. If your services are leased, you must provide a copy of the valid lease agreement along with a copy of a valid International Fuel Tax Agreement credential. If you have any questions regarding the International Fuel Tax Agreement, just call (317)615-7345.
