Consultation Services

click here to request consultationFree Consultation Program

INSafe's free consultation program offers businesses a voluntary approach to designing safety and health in the workplace. By building upon employee-management participation in an on-site survey, consultation can bring workers and employers together to develop and implement programs to control hazards and prevent worker injuries and illnesses. Through pooled resources and periodic inspections, employers and employees together work to make their job sites safer.

The consultation program is completely separate from IOSHA enforcement. A consultant will visit your work site at your request to provide the service(s) you have chosen. The consultant does not issue citations or impose penalties for violations of federal or state statutes that he or she may find during the consultation visit. Although a consultant cannot guarantee that your workplace will pass a federal or state inspection, it has been demonstrated that a consultation visit will significantly reduce the citation or penalty impact of future inspections.

Consultation is a confidential service. The consultant will NOT provide the name of your company, its owner(s), or any information about your workplace to IOSHA enforcement staff, so long as you - the employer - agree to correct any serious hazards discovered during a consultation visit. Be assured, your request for consultation service will NOT trigger a federal or state inspection.

How a Consultation Works

  • Step #1 - Request
To request a free consultation your request must be in writing. The assigned consultant will contact you to establish a mutually agreeable consultative date.
  • Step #2 - On-Site Visit
During the visit, you or your designated representative will participate in the opening conference, walk through, and closing conference. During the walk through, the consultant may confer with individual employees in order to further identify and judge the nature and extent of existing or potential safety hazards.
  • Step #3 - Evaluation and Report
A report detailing all findings and recommendations, including methods to improve your safety and health program, is prepared and provided to you.
  • Step #4 - Correction of Serious Hazards
The report you will receive will discuss hazards with recommended abatement dates.
  • Step #5 - Proof of Correction
Once hazards have been corrected, confirmation with the date and the method of correction will need to be submitted. If necessary, a follow-up consultation may be scheduled.

On-Site Consultations Will Not

  • Issue citations or propose penalties for violating Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Act (IOSHA) standards.
  • Make referrals to IOSHA enforcement personnel, provided all noted hazards have been corrected.
  • Guarantee that any workplace will "pass" an IOSHA inspection.
  • Prescribe specific engineering designs or recommend private firms.

To Request an On-Site Consultation

The request must be in writing and include the following information:

  • Request for an on-site consultation.
  • Type of consultation.
  • Type of business.

Sample Programs

Many of the OSHA standards require written plans to ensure complete, site-specific, and uniform compliance with the requirements. For available programs from INSafe click here. Some may be retrieved from this web site while others may be mailed to you by contacting our office. Many are available from the national office at http://www.osha.gov/.

Technical Assistance

In addition to the many other services provided by INSafe, the agency also offers technical assistance for employers and employees with interest in the state of Indiana. This can be accomplished by phone, office visits (to our office), or by a site visit to your office or designated location. This assistance is not a substitute for an on-site consultation. It is designed to answer specific questions you may have.

To have a safety or health specialist visit your facility to review or assess a particular operation, program, conduct noise measurements or perform air sampling and analysis, send a written request to INSafe. You may also email the request by clicking here.
