DNR Outdoor Recreation
Indiana's Long Distance Trails
Trails selected for this website are 10 miles long or greater, have a natural trail surface, and most have camping available to enhance the wilderness experience. These long distance trails occur on properties managed by a variety of public agencies. Each agency has it’s own role to play in the conservation of Indiana’s natural resources and management practices may differ. This variety provides the users with a broad spectrum of recreational experiences. Some of these trails accommodate multiple uses, including mountain biking, horseback riding, and other activities.
The Indiana Trails Inventory lists over 1000 miles of trails open to hiking. These trails provide a wide variety of experiences, from short paved urban walks to 50-mile rugged backwoods hikes. The entire Trails Inventory can be accessed on-line at: http://www.in.gov/dnr_old/outdoor/trails/index.htm. This database lists all types of trails (not just hiking), location, and contacts for more information.
