National Abandoned Mine Land - Reclamation Award Winner
This abandoned 25-acre mine site had been a detriment to the town of Bicknell for many years. Along with the many environmental concerns with the site travelers often referred to Bicknell as the city that had the ugly coal mine at the edge of town. Reoccurring gob pile fires, heavy metals, unpleasant odors, and acid drainage into nearby Indian Creek where constant problems.
Although not large in size, this reclamation project was difficult due to the extremely close working quarters. This required a high degree of coordination on the part of the contractor to accommodate unforeseen problems during excavation. Now that reclamation has been completed this site has greatly improved environmentally and an old eye sore for local residents and travelers has been eliminated.
