The Division of Reclamation offers two different views of Indiana coal mining activity – past and present. For a view of current mining activity click here DNR: Active Mining Permits Map. This is a map of current coal mining activity only and offers a selection of mine site related information: permit boundaries, mining status, coal production, pre- and post-mining land use and more. For a different perspective of historical as well as active coal mining in Indiana click here Abandoned Mine Land Maps for the Indiana Coal Mine Information System (CMIS). This map is a product of partnership between the Indiana Geological Survey, and the Division of Reclamation. All known historical mining activity, as well as affected areas from current operations is outlined. This site provides a different collection of mine data and viewing options. Either is useful and flexible to meet your particular interests.
NOTE: CMIS is hosted by the Indiana Geological Survey in Bloomington, IN. This link takes you directly to their Coal Mine Information System web page. On the drop down menu along the left side a CMIS Map Viewer Help pdf “Getting Started” is offered. It is recommended you view this prior to accessing the map page. Once you are familiar with the tools of the page you will be much better prepared to view the map and enjoy its' full potential. Once you have accessed the map page, simply click on "Accept Terms of Disclaimer" and the map will load.
