County. This is the latest of the bridges, some of which were lost to high water and arson.

The flat-bottom boat rocked gently in the Eel River. My guide took occasional recourse to the electric motor to straighten it, or guide it to the channel or past rapids. Soaring above, an osprey clutched a fish in its talons. Swallows patrolled the breach between sycamores on either bank.
“It’s so peaceful. What more could a guy ask for?” he said.
An August rain the day before had ended a dry spell that, a week earlier, had made the journey from Adamsboro to Logansport’s Riverside Park a 13-hour trip.
Today, however, the current was swift and the water deep enough to carry the boat through the course in little more than three hours, with only a couple of scrapes against the rocky bed.
